Friendly Poker Wagers Among Friends

Many people enjoy a friendly poker game every week or so with their buddies as a way to relax and have fun. However, if you’re not careful, these games can turn from friendly to unfriendly in just one hand. If you want to keep your friends as your friends, you might want to do a few things before you plan that next poker game.

First, have sensible wagers in place. It is usually good idea to have a set limit of how much money can be wagered on a given night. For example, you might want to have a $5 or $10 buy-in with no re-buys, so that worst-case scenario, each person is only out a small amount of money if they lose. This will prevent things from getting too heated, because the amount of money being wagered is so small.

Second, use poker chips instead of real money is to keep track of betting. Casinos learned a long time ago that poker chips are a great way to keep people from understanding how much money they’ve truly won or lost. While they do this to make it seem like you haven’t lost much money, in a friendly game you can do this to make it look like you won a lot when it might only be five dollars.

Last, don’t let any personal arguments get too out of hand. Of course friends might give each other a hard time, but they shouldn’t be mean or nasty in a friendly game. If things do get out of hand, don’t let that influence the betting or have someone to go home losing a lot of money and having hurt feelings.

In short, keep your friendly poker games friendly and you should be fine. After all, poker is supposed to be fun. Losing a hand in poker should never mean losing your friends. Also, by that same token, you should never want to win so badly that it damages a friendship.
